Moving Forward

Gotta cut the burl before it warps. So I cut it out after gluing the halves together. Looks great and also left me enough burl for another top!!! Also cut the rough scarf joint in the tough as hell tiger rosewood. Then started some finishing tests on some scrap. First coat impressions are that the…

Holy Mother of Burl

A super nice employee from Austin hardwoods helped me split the chunk of burl maple I had. A lot of the other aces said its be too small and thy didn’t want to risk it. It looks spectacular. I’m tryin to find the best way to get two tops out of it. One will be…

Tiger Rosewood Neck Blanks

Never heard of this stuff but its not that pricey and has an extremely nice and solid tap tone. I can tell already that this is gonna be perfect for the maple burl topped/ sapele backed twins. Now to just find an appropriate fretboard wood. I’m thinking pau ferro. It looks spectacular and takes a…

SC CAD Template v1.0

Just gotta create separate boxes for the cavity cover and route. And then gotta do the tuner holes and string spread.

Body Finished!

Here we go! The two other blanks are glued up and look great. What takes the cake is now that the finish on my redwood is polished it looks like a million bucks.

Singlecut CAD Designs

Oh man this is awesome. Thanks to heretic guitars’ tutorial on luthiertalk.com I now know how to make my own cad templates. This will increase precision of all key aspects of the building process! I also glued those two bodies of sapele together. Hopefully in a few weeks I can take these all I get…

NWD! New Wood Day!

Oh man oh man. Thanks to Eric Burton I now know of a new place to buy my lumber from. They have so many different species its like a toy store. I found some incredible sapele with a super tight grain and a very dark color. It’s gonna look stunning with some oil and wax….

New Problems & Lessons Learned

So this build is really testing my patience. It isn’t going nearly as smoothly as I’d hoped it would’ve by now. Good news is the finish is finally free of hazy spots; and with some 8000-12000 micro-mesh (I was playing it very very safe), I can see the polish starting to take. Now to let…

Patience…

So I got up to the very end. Was polishing the final coat and I noticed a hazy spot. I’d seen them pop up here and there. Nothing too big, they’d sand out after some wet sanding. But on the left side of the body on the curved portion there were persistent hazy spots. I…

Neck Carved!

Man this feels good man. I left the back a tilting D shape with the flat area tilting with your thumbs ascension up the neck. Figured I’d give it a shot. I used my random orbital sander to smooth out everything. Beats the hell outta sandpaper but you have I work FAST and maintain absolute…
